BENEFITS OF OUR INGREDIENTS
Calcium Carbonate
A common mineral used to supply calcium to the diet. The calcium in calcium carbonate is nutritionally available and very effective. While the name may have a chemical sounding ring to it, it is a very safe, natural, and effective ingredient.
Chicory Inulin Extract
A form of storage carbohydrate similar to starch found in potatoes. This soluble carbohydrate behaves as a fibre in the colon of the dog or cat. It is often referred to as a "prebiotic" because it provides nutrition to the bacteria that inhabit this organ. The net result of this fermentation by colonic bacteria is the production of short chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, which is an obligate fuel for the coloncytes (cells lining the intestines). Further, they provide food for the beneficial bacteria which are then able to out-compete in the game of colonization with the pathogenic bacteria.
Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal
Dried aerial part of the alfalfa plant (medicago sativa).
Source of fiber and antioxidant carotenoids.
Dried Brewers Yeast
Contains large amounts of high-quality protein, is a potent source of naturally occurring B-vitamins, and is a rich source of many important minerals, such as iron, zinc and potassium.
Ground Barley
Barley is a hardy and nutritious grain and contains a relatively high amount of protein and fibre. This soluble fibre slows the rate of digestion of food.
Soybean Meal
Dried protein meal resulting from the seed of soy (glycine max) in which the oils have been removed by hexane extraction.
Soya Oil
Oil derived from the hexane extraction from soybeans. A thin water consistency oil, light white to yellow in color, and rich in linolenic acid.
(preserved with Rosemary Extract, Vitamin E and Citric Acid)
Sodium Chloride
Sodium Chloride, otherwise known as salt. It is used for seasoning in human foods, but in pet foods it provide essential sources of sodium and chloride. Sodium works in conjunction with Potassium to maintain proper balance in the blood as well as maintains the water-balance throughout the body. Chloride also helps maintain water-balance and is necessary in the regulation of acid-base balance as well.
Timothy Hay
A lower nutrient dense forage with a greater proportion of fibre and lower content of calcium and vitamin A.
Yeast Extract
Derived from the removal of the contents from lysed yeast cells. It is full of B-vitamins, minerals, and nucleic acids, among many others, yeast extract is an exceptional ingredient to complement the nutritional fortification of the diet, and it adds substantial flavour to foods.
Yucca Schidigera Extract
The Yucca Schidigera Extract is important in aiding fat digestion in the small intestine. It has also been shown to select against G+ bacteria and certain protozoa. In addition to these direct effects of Yucca on fermentation, it has been reported to improve neonate survivability, enhance the immune function, impair tumor formation, and improve growth in various animal species (Cheeke 1999).
Wheat Shorts
Wheat Shorts are a fraction of wheat milling in which following grinding and sieving, it contains a small fraction of starch , bran, and tailings. For discussion purposes it is a mix of bran and some flour that is derived as one of the "cuts" along the path of flour milling.
